More recently, Cosmi and colleagues (2015) examined the effects of daily wine consumption in subjects enrolled in an Italian trial of heart failure patients (mean age ~67), most of whom had reduced ejection-fraction heart failure. Different levels of daily wine consumption (i.e., sometimes, 1 to 2 glasses/day, and ≥3 glasses/day) had no effect on fatal or nonfatal outcomes (e.g., hospitalization for a CV event). Subjects who drank wine more often, however, were less likely to have symptoms of depression and more likely to have a better perception of health status. They also had lower levels of circulating inflammatory markers, such as C-terminal proendothelin-1 and pentraxin-3 (Cosmi et al. 2015). You should also be cautious if you have strong risk factors for developing a heart rhythm disorder, such as high blood pressure or coronary artery disease, or if you have experienced arrhythmias in the past.
“And so there are going to be people who have major depressive disorder, who may be getting treatment, but may have an enhanced susceptibility to having worsening anxiety or depression on these drugs that we just did not account for.” The FDA database is voluntary, unverified by the agency and may have duplicates. As a result, it has no denominator or comparison group to tease out whether adverse events – like suicidal thoughts – are the result of a drug or something else.
The federal government defines a standard drink as 12 ounces of regular beer, five ounces of wine, or one and a half ounces of distilled spirits (40 percent alcohol). They commonly include fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling of the legs and feet. A cardiologist explains how alcohol affects your heart and why moderation is key, especially if you live with other health conditions. Let’s face it, a hangover in your mid-40s doesn’t feel the same as one in your early 20s.
A single drink had little effect on blood pressure, but when people consumed two drinks, they experienced a slight dip in their blood pressure levels in the hours that followed. When they had more than two drinks, however, they saw their blood pressure levels fall at first and then begin to climb, eventually becoming slightly elevated about 13 hours after they drank. The devices contained a button that the participants were told to press any time they had an alcoholic beverage.
The new study was published on Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The conclusions, along with data from previous studies, suggest that people with a history of atrial fibrillation could reduce their chances of developing arrhythmias by cutting back on alcohol or avoiding it altogether. While binge drinking can be harmful, heavy drinking is much worse. Chronically drinking too much causes a lot of long-term health problems, including weakening the heart muscle, which leads to cardiomyopathy and sudden heart failure.
Other medical conditions
After, reviewing the FAERS reports NPR found, Rothberg said almost every patient listed had an underlying major health condition that, based on the database alone, would make it hard to determine whether the drug caused the suicidal thoughts. She explained that these kinds of incidents often don’t happen during the drug’s clinical trials because those studies include relatively small numbers of patients who are taking the drug for a limited time. Once a drug is on the market, millions of patients might take it for years.
However, the intake and regularity of one’s alcohol consumption is not the only factor in determining how alcohol can affect the cardiovascular system. Abstract understanding how alcohol can affect one’s cardiovascular system, what signs and symptoms to be aware of, and how to locate effective alcohol addiction treatment can be essential for making healthy life choices. Some of the potential cellular changes related to ethanol consumption reviewed above are illustrated in figure 5. More than one cellular event may be happening at the same time, and, as with other chronic health conditions, the relevant mechanisms may be synergistic and interrelated.
Does Alcohol Affect Cholesterol?
Ozempic, approved by the Food and Drug Administration for Type 2 diabetes, is racking up blockbuster sales because many people are taking it to lose weight. As more people try it, reports to the FDA about possible side effects are rising. Recovery becomes so much more manageable when you have the right kind of emotional support. Our online community of patients, survivors and caregivers is here to keep you going no matter the obstacles.
And while enjoying celebratory spirits in moderation is alright for most people, it’s important to be aware you can fall victim to holiday heart syndrome if you overdo it. This is when overeating and overindulging in alcohol lead to an irregular heartbeat. And sure, we’ve all had a night here or there where we’ve had one too many and we know it. But it’s important to make sure those nights of overindulgence are the exception and not the rule.
Be physically active every day
As with studies suggesting that alcohol benefits overall heart health, Brown says, his research couldn’t prove that it caused heart failure patients to live longer. There is little evidence about the effects of alcohol on congestive heart failure, which makes it more challenging for health professionals eco sober house boston to advise people with the condition. However, the AHA concludes that people should drink alcohol in moderation, if at all, and they should not start drinking for unproven health benefits. Johns Hopkins cardiologist John Williams, MB BCH, advises people with heart failure not to drink at all.
- Plaques can narrow the arteries, reducing blood flow to the heart.
- NPR analyzed the FDA’s adverse event reporting system, or FAERS, and learned that the agency has received 489 reports of patients experiencing anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts while taking semaglutide drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus.
- For a lot of people on long-term medications, alcohol can make the drug less effective.
- People who drink heavily can lower their risk of a heart attack by limiting the amount of alcohol they drink or cutting it out altogether.

Once Jenny and Jackie started looking for information online about Ozempic and mental health, they learned about the investigation by European regulators. They also found other U.S. patients who shared experiences like Jenny’s on social media. After a month and a half of taking Ozempic, Jenny Kent said her mental health troubles had started to affect her whole life. At work, she’d find herself reacting to run-of-the-mill requests as if she was being unjustly fired. She began withdrawing from her friends and hiding her feelings from her family.
Previous clinical studies offer few answers
Researchers enrolled 100 patients with paroxysmal or intermittent AFib, which tends to go away within a short period of time (unlike chronic AFib). Patients in the study were 64 years old on average; the majority were white (85%) or male (80%). Past medical history, medications and lifestyle habits were assessed through chart reviews and patient interviews. Each participant was fitted with a wearable heart monitor that continuously tracked their heart rhythm and an ankle sensor to objectively detect when more than two to three drinks were consumed on a given occasion.
Psychologically, however, many people feel low in mood after they’re discharged home, especially following open heart surgery. Heavier drinking (binge drinking) can also bring on a first episode of arrhythmia; once this has happened for the first time, you’re at an increased risk in the future. We all know that a glass or two of wine can help you relax and unwind. But alcohol can also have pronounced effects on your cardiovascular system in the hours after you consume it, causing your heart to beat faster, at least in the short term. And in general, the more you drink, the greater the uptick in your heart rate.
Although the compounds in red wine may be beneficial for heart health, the risks for someone with heart failure may outweigh these benefits. Other researchers have used genetic approaches (i.e., transgenic animals) to prevent ethanol-induced oxidative stress. One approach included overexpression of proteins such as insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which stimulates growth and cell proliferation and has antiapoptotic effects (see Zhang et al. 2014). In contrast to control mice, the IGF-1–expressing animals exhibited no evidence of changes in expression of antioxidant enzymes (i.e., superoxide dismutase-1) or any decreases in contractile function after 16 weeks of ethanol consumption. The findings suggest a protective effect of overexpression of IGF-1 in the transgenic animals (Zhang et al. 2014). The way in which alcohol consumption has been measured and categorized varies, sometimes making it challenging to compare data among studies.
Understand Alcohol Servings and Drinking Levels
However, the consensus among medical professionals is that the drawbacks of alcohol far outweigh any of its suggested benefits. Pregnant women and anyone with a history of alcoholism should not drink. Alcohol consumption and risk of recurrent cardiovascular events and mortality. Binge drinking is the quick, high-volume consumption of alcohol can force you to become rapidly intoxicated, which can cause all kinds of harm to the body. Jenny Kent (right) says her younger sister, Jackie, helped her get help when she experienced mental health problems after taking Ozempic. “You know, that’s not necessarily what goes on in clinical practice,” she says.
Is alcohol intake linked with heart failure?
Sometimes, the first symptom sign of a heart attack is sudden cardiac arrest. Call 911 or emergency medical help if you think you might be having a heart attack. Researchers have found evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction or impaired bioenergetics related to alcohol consumption.
